Hello,

Does anybody have any news about the release dates of TSM 7.2 and 7.3? I heard version 7.3 is coming with online deduplication!!! (bye bye ProtecTIER? :( )

Great info!!! It feels a little weird to see how the original name (ADSM aside) is disappearing :(. I saw they mentioned ProtecTIER ("ProtecTIER options are also available") but as suspected it seems they want to give it a very secondary role when they say "[TSM dedup] delivers the performance of appliances without the cost and complexity".

Also saw this, which is interesting: http://www.silverstring.com/blog/has-ibm-cracked-the-dedupe-code

"Most importantly, it announced a way to deliver backup cost savings through a new, software based, deduplication method...A new in-line method attempts to improve scalability, improve deduplication savings and eliminate the extra admin tasks. IBM are claiming a single TSM database can now handle in excess of 30 Terabytes ingest per day with a total primary storage pool approaching 4 Petabytes"

Wow, so I wonder if they were using an IBM developed dedup method and now they were able to integrate ProtecTIER's online dedup technology.

BTW, now I understand that the guy who informed me about the new features (not a TSM guy) most likely was confused and mentioned version 7.3 when he really was talking about version 7.1.3.

Now I wonder how long it will take to release the 7.1.3 certification tests as I was planning to obtain a new TSM implementer certification (the one I have is for v6.1), but considering the renaming and the new capabilities maybe it would be good to wait if it's not too long.

Surely you mean 7.1.3, not 7.3. 7.1.3 looks like it's out on the public ftp as of a few hours ago. time to give it a download :D

Updated our secondary site and the Operations Center. I'm disturbed by the fact that the "q pr" command output looks different :p. The Operations Center had a makeover following the keep-it-simple graphic design trend you see nowadays in everything. Yet to see the new features working.

I'm still wondering why they didn't consider it a release upgrade considering all the new features and the rebranding.

I've been playing around with the container pool stuff - it seems really cool and how dedup should have been from the start.
