Hi,

I don't have alot of experience with Tivoli, but I was wondering if the following would be possible.

We have an old TSM 5.4 Server here which is still working, but not in production anymore.

Is it possible to "restore" this server to another machine which has a clean installation of the same version (5.4) or a higher version (e.g. 6.3 or later) using only the DBBackup files?
So after the "restore" the new server would have an identical configuration and settings of the old server....

I am comparing it with an application like e.g. a browser and a copy of all the saved bookmarks which are stored in a certain folder. Once you have copied that folder to the new machine, you would have all your bookmarks and stuff available again like on your previous PC.

Is this possible??

You can restore it, but it will need to be at the same 5.4 release or a higher 5.4 release. It might work with a 5.5 version, it will certainly not work with a 6.x or 7.x version because these use DB2, while 5.x does not use DB2.

Hi Marclant,

Thanks for the reply.

Do you have any pointers/instructions on how to restore it on a different PC with the same version??

I have seen a DBBACKUP folder, so I assume this is where the database configuration resides.
Is it just a matter of using the same folder structure with files and than starting TSM??

In order to restore the database, you need a database backup.
Do you have a database backup on file or tape?
If yes, is it on tape or file?
If no, you cannot restore.

If on file, you can use these to restore the DB:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSAVT2_5.5.0/com.ibm.itsm390n.doc/b_adminref_zos507.htm#dqx2r_cmd_dsmserv_restore_db_pit_novolhist

If on tape, you use the same doc, but you will also need to configure a manual library to load the tape:

Hi Marclant,

The database is or should be on tape.

If by file you mean, just the files that are stored now in a folder on the server, then yes.
There is a folder called DBBACKUP and I assume this is where the files are, or the folder is associated with the DBBACKUP pool.

Can I just copy this folder over to the other physical machine and do a restore?

So e.g.:
Node-1 has the DBBACKUP folder.
Copy this folder to Node-2 in a temporary folder and perform a restore from this temporary folder.

I attached a snapshot of the folder.

The snapshot looks like a database backup to a file. So you should be able to copy that directory to the new machine and restore as per the link I provided. You may need to read the volume history file to see which one is the most recent and which one is the first in sequence if there is more than one file for a single backup.
