We're in a bind. We need barcode labels, but we cannot get any more before we run out, and we don't have enough tapes to recycle until then. We do, however, have another collection of non-TSM tapes (same LTO generation) with all numeric barcodes, but we'd prefer not to use these barcode labels long term as they don't fit our sequencing. Since the internal label must match the barcode label, we cannot just swap the barcodes once we get some new ones. The only workaround that I can see would be to use these tapes short term, and then once we have the new barcodes we'd then have to move the data from any primary and copy pools with all numeric barcodes to other tapes with the "new" barcodes. That's not too gargantuan a task because it's our hope that that won't last too long, but it's still an aggravation to say the least. The previous "all numeric" barcoded tapes would then be ejected, their barcodes replaced, reloaded and put back into the scratch pool to be reused.
Anyway, does anyone see a potential problem (other than time) with this approach? Is there anything that I've overlooked here? All admonishments welcome, please.
One gotcha that I can see is that we'd have to be careful not to take a standard sequence barcoded tape off site too soon because it might have a spanning file that continues onto one of these all-numeric barcoded tapes or vice versa. When we go to move the data from one of these all-numeric barcoded tapes, what if it needed to read the beginning or end of a file that spanned to/from some tape with a normal sequence? Obviously, that tape would have to be in the library or on site. Is there a way to determine which tapes are required to do a move?
