Hello.

I get a overall compression factor of 10:0x. Which I'm very much thinking is not common at all. We run Spectrum Protect on Windows with DD4500s.

We also have extensive monthly backups (and yearly) that do not expire (legal requirements) and go back about 10 years. We have a lot of NDMP backups that also fall in this category. This kind of explains our compression ratios.

We are currently looking at EMC Elastic Cloud Tiering to siphon data out of our DD's and curtail the escalating cost.

Was wondering what typical ratios our DD users out there are getting?

Regards

Regardless of the hardware appliance or software used to dedup data, the dedup ratio is more a function of the type of the data stored. As a general rule, compressed data and encrypted data do not dedup well. When using an appliance to store TSM data, you can't do any analysis either to see which node dedups better than another because your appliance stores TSM volumes, not client data.

It would be easier to isolate if you were using TSM dedup because you can report on the dedup ratio of each individual node to make it easier to identify which ones work well and which one don't.
