As a general principle I have suggested the following as a guide for our
future user interfaces when it comes to having to pick one item from a
potentially long list like a client list.

1. Long lists should be sorted and filtered.
2. Input boxes should support type-a-head where the user starts entering
the host name and a drop down appears with the matching hosts.

That sounds right on. I'll vote for that one!
