Check this.
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/327648.htm
Although the title is "Best Practices for using Storage Lifecycle Policies
in NetBackup 6.5.3 and 6.5.4" it has many VTL related maters.
At page 10:
Do not share virtual tape drives
Because NetBackup does not differentiate between physical and virtual tape
drives it is
possible to configure the drives in a VTL to behave in exactly the same way
as physical
tape drives from a NetBackup perspective, including using the Shared Storage
Option to
share virtual tape drives between media servers. While such sharing is
possible with
virtual tape drives it is not efficient and can lead to drive contention.
When using VTLs
create as many virtual tape drives as you need for all media servers, do not
create a
smaller number and share them between media servers.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] SSO and VTL
I'm sitting in a NetApp VTL class right now, and we're discussing how to
setup the VTL in NetBackup. The instructor just brought up an
interesting point. With VTL, you can create multiple "drives" for free,
and then present those drives to different master/media servers. Because
of this, NetApp advises to NOT purchase SSO when using a VTL. I think
that's an interesting point.
Is anyone out there using SSO & VTL? I'm interested in seeing how other
folks have implemented these two technologies together.
Thanks.
