Bryan,

If you look in the VTL section of the NBU 6.5 HCL (link below), you will see all VTLs supported by NBU, the inquiry string supported for each (which is the type of tape library you need to configure the VTL as), the OS platforms supported for that VTL and the specific emulated drive type(s) supported with that VTL. You will notice the DL3D series is supported as a DL1500 library type  because both the 1500 and 3000 use the same software.

The NDMP spec doesnt support backing up directly to disk (you have to use remote NDMP and transfer the data through the media server to do that). One of the primary reasons customers use VTLs is because you can backup a NDMP NAS device directly to a VTL as they emulate tape.
