Re: [Veritas-bu] End Of Life - NetBackup 5.1

The difference in earlier delays was that
some of the earlier 6.x implementations were viewed as highly unstable by
users.
Now though most users think it is at least
“stable” even if not “optimal” so there isn’t really reason not to move
forward. It seems likely most of the folks that haven’t moved at this point
have not done so because of lack of time/resources as Simon indicates or simply
because they believe in the “if ain’t broke don’t fix it” adage and aren’t
likely to upgrade until they really need to do so. It doesn’t seem likely
Symantec would delay EOL for those reasons any more than most vendors do
because they would NEVER be able to move forward.

Veritas/symantec is
telling the same answer for the past 2 years stating the EOL for NBU 5.1, but
still not yet stopped support. Earlier they told its Oct 2008, and still
no HIGH alert for that NBU 5.1. May be they are not going to stop soon.
If its getting stopped soon, then many Big implementations will get migrated to
6.5 or other which is a stable version. Symantec is not yet given such a
stable like 5.1.

Hi Joseph
Not really worried about the upgrade, just the time to get it done,
and if something goes wrong. The environment is pretty mixed up 24x7, so need
to take care before going at it like a bull in a china shop!
Basically, if I had a Tech issue, that did not rely on a bug fix, I
needed to confirm there would be partial support

NetBackup 5.1 goes EOL on December 1st.
supporting an upgrade – I suspect your call would be answered but if you
start having issues due to a bug in the 5.1 code then you could end up in a
world of pain.
If your concerned about the upgrade why not talk to your
account manager and see whether you can get a partial-support exception for 5.1
for a couple of months or so to cover the timeframe needed to get your
upgrades done…
Also check out http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/290141.htm
for lots of info about upgrading from 5.x to 6.5

Cant find the
document on the web, but to confirm is the 5.1 End Of Support (in other words
no more support ever from Symantec) is December 2008?
Just wondered that if you are trying to upgrade to 6.5 AFTER this
date, whether Symantec will still support the 5.1 environment?
Could anyone clarify?

Simon
