There's a bit of a flaw in your question as it implies PA-RISC wasn't 64
bit. However as of PA-RISC 2.0 introduced back when they were still
making K class servers it was a 64 bit CPU. With HP-UX 11.0 you still
had the option to install the OS as 32 bit or 64 bit. As of HP-UX 11.11
(11i v1) you had to install it 64 bit.

Running a 64 bit OS on PA-RISC did not require the applications
(NetBackup, Oracle etc...) to be 64 bit - they could still be 32 bit but
if run that way had the same memory limitations as if run on a 32 bit
OS. HP introduced Memory Windows as a way around some of those
limitations (good for DBs like Sybase that were still only 32 bit at the
time).

For whatever reason NetBackup runs only 32 bit on PA-RISC 2.x systems.

Itanium as I understand it only runs 64 bit applications.

HP won't ship any new PA-RISC based systems after the end of this year.
They'll continue to sell parts for PA-RISC based systems through end of
next year.

If you plan to continue on HP-UX you'll definitely have to go to Itanium
at some point.

Having said all that we are still doing PA-RISC 2.x as our master so
would be interested to hear if anyone is running Itanium based HP-UX for
a master. We only have one Itanium system at the moment and it is only
a client.

Have you checked the compatibility matrix to be sure HP-UX on Itanium is
supported as a master?

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup on HP-UX 64-bit on Itanium

We are currently running our Master and Media Servers (6.0mp5) on HP-UX
32-bit on PA-RISC. We are condering moving the Master server to 64-bit
HPUX on Itanium (6.5.3 when GA). I am curious if there is anyone out
there running on HP Itanium for Netbackup Master server. If so, can you
answer a few questions.

Any issues or gotchas running on this OS?
Netbackup stable on this OS?
How is tech support knowledge?
Any features that are not supported on Itanium that you were looking
for?
Did you move from PA-RISC to Itanium? If so, did you see any performance
improvements due to 64 bit?

Any feedback or insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks !
