Could you do it if the tape was encrypted --- and had as long as necessary to attempt to crack the encryption.


Obviously, yes, to both - an unencrypted tape and an encrypted tape.  The goal with encryption is to make the problem take so long that it's no longer practical.  For example, if it took me 250 years to crack your bank account, what good would it do me?
