If the databases are stored on a SAN, chances are the SAN vendor has snapshot software that will integrate with VSS to take consistent snapshots of the data, then you can move the snaps around from the array side to tier2/3 storage, or NDMP backup directly off the SAN array.

 

Netapp, EMC, and HDS all have this technology.

We have some Windows SQL databases over ½ TB that are now becoming a problem with backing up and duplicating in a timely manner.

On UNIX for large database we do BCVs and flat file backups.   Not being a Windows expert I’m not sure what is possible on the Windows side of things.

What are others doing for large SQL backups?
