If the databases are stored on a SAN, chances are the SAN vendor
has snapshot software that will integrate with VSS to take consistent snapshots
of the data, then you can move the snaps around from the array side to tier2/3
storage, or NDMP backup directly off the SAN array.
Netapp, EMC, and HDS all have this technology.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Suggestions for long running Windows SQL backups
We have some
Windows SQL databases over ½ TB that are now becoming a problem with backing up and
duplicating in a timely manner.
On UNIX for
large database we do BCVs and flat file backups. Not being a
Windows expert I’m not sure what is possible on the Windows side of things.
What are
others doing for large SQL backups?
