I’d like to have instant message at the moment I had a problem but would hate it the rest of the time.

Using a mailing list to me is a good between instant messaging and forums. That is with forums you have to login where with email you can set a rule to get things to a different folder. If you have time to look at it and help when it comes in you do. If you don’t have time then it sits there for someone else (hopefully) to help with.

The lags seen in this list are a bit maddening at times but I wouldn’t want to go the instant messaging.

gtalk and Skype work great for us. We are on multiple client networks. Those 2 make it through anywhere for us...
