Go with latest supported RedHat Enterpise Linux.
Go with 4gbps HBAs, we've been using qlogic HBAs with no problems.
Make sure you have enough bandwidth on the system board (mobo) for the
type of drives you are placing on each server.

e.g., low-end server should not have more than 1 LTO-3/4 drive if its 1gbps
but for 10gbps you obviously want a beefier box for 10gbps card and maybe
2 dual port cards for 4 LTO-3 drives, but if LTO-4, then 3 of those.
