Yes, I agree with Paul. I think you are overcomplicating the matter. Unless you need to physically separate the media/drives from what you already have in there, say for some regulatory or management reason, then NBU can handle it just fine if you follow what Paul stated.

What are you trying to accomplish? A media format upgrade?

There's no need to partition the library.

If your LTO3 drives and carts are defined as HCART3
Just add the new drives and carts as HCART or HCART2 or something other
than HCART3.
Load up some scratch and you're off to the races.

The new drives will not try to read, write, or otherwise access the
previous carts, and vice versa.

Unless there's more to this than meets the eye.
