Hi David,
Here's some thoughts regarding your scenario.
Things to consider.
a. Resources.
i. Determine criteria for which will be Media Servers & which will be
IP clients to backup your 125Tb.
ii. How many clients to be backed up? With so much data to be backed
up, you would most certainly need more SAN Media Servers.
iii. Do you have a backup n/w? If you do, you're in better shape than
most of us. If not, is it possible? This will dramatically reduce your
SAN media servers by having more IP clients backed up to dedicated media
servers reducing your Tape Drive fingerprint. Of course, you're
offsetting one cost for another, but you'll save if you reduce your FC
drives and HBAs and SAN switches.
iv. Are you open to VTLs? They have replication technology albeit they
are all still in infancy. Disk STUs may be more robust for replication.
Remember, there are costs involved in replication.
b. Off-site requirements. ie
i. Will you be sending the primary copy off-site?
ii. When do they need to go off-site?
iii. Are you sending INCR and FULLs off-site as well?
You say that you need to backup 125Tb and send it off-site. To be able
to determine how to send it off-site, it would be important to know how
plan to back it up and more details on your off-site requirements. eg if
you do a FULL on Saturday and need to send a copy off-site by Monday
morning, then your backup strategy is important, because duplicating
125Tb (while doable :) with even more resource requirements), is not
practical. One method would be in-line tape copy and then duplicate only
the failed backup_ids.
This is a good thread. Your answers could then determine next steps.
