Good morning all-

I'm hoping to get some feedback on the pros/cons of, differences and similarities between, and experience with Symantec's "Sharepoint" agent (for NBU 6) vs. the stock SQL agent, or with "other" agents that may exist for Sharepoint.

According to the marketing material, the Symantec agent expands the recoverability of Sharepoint to the file level, removing the need to restore an entire "site". It also supposedly provides a simpler, centralized GUI for performing backups and restores. So - first question - has anyone used this tool? Did you find value in it, or were the boxed Sharepoint tools sufficient? How well did Symantec's agent work - for restoring files, full/partial sites? Were there any components that couldn't be restored or backed up - or just didn't work as expected or advertised?  Anything to watch out for or be wary of?

We have begun implementing Sharepoint, and already have the SQL agent installed and working. So as of now, we backup Sharepoint via the SQL agent. The project staff procured a utility which is in effect, a "recycle bin" for Sharepoint which allows them to recover at the file level as well, within their defined date range - independent of NBU. Does anyone else use this method? If you used the stock SQL agent, other than the GUI and the supposed ability to recover at the file level, did you find any worthwhile benefits to purchasing and using the Symantec agent?

Additionally, the next release of Sharepoint ('07?) supposedly has it's "own" agent that is a direct interface with NBU and other backup packages. Has any one else heard this - if so - are you using it? How does the MS flavored agent work/not work? How does it stack up to the Symantec agent, or - other agents?

Finally, has anyone else used any other agents - that somehow interface with or plug into NBU? I've seen a couple other vendors try to get into this arena via software and/or hardware via snapshots…but as of yet, there appears to be little feedback or reviews.

Any insight would be appreciated -
