Additional tips on using exclude_list and
include_list for managing files to be excluded and included in a backup
Details:
This is additional information which
should be used in conjunction with the exclude_list/include_list information in
the VERITAS NetBackup (tm) System Administrator's Guide for UNIX.
1. An include_list can contain only
directories and files that are a subset of the files list defined in the
policy.
For example:
If the files list defined in the policy is
/etc/*, do not have an include_list specify anything outside of that criteria.
In this case, an include_list with the
entry /var/* would not be permitted. NetBackup would ignore it.
2. An include_list requires a
corresponding exclude_list.
For example:
If files list defined for a policy is
/etc/*
The exclude_list entry could be /etc/* and
the include_list entry could be /etc/*.conf.
This will result in backing up only the
*.conf files in the /etc directory.
3. When using the exclude_list and the
include_list, one should give significant thought and planning to the process.
Because of the way that NetBackup processes the information, it can add
significant processing overhead to the backup. The first thing that NetBackup
does on an automatic backup, is to build the backup file list (work list) using
the policy's include files. So if you have specified the root directory (/)
with the cross mount points attribute set, it will build a file list of all
mounted file systems. Next, NetBackup checks for the exclude_list, and if the
exclude_list is /*, NetBackup will throw away the backup list it has just made.
NetBackup then reads the include_list and in this case builds a new backup list
of directories and files to include in the backup.

DOCUMENTATION: If there is more than one
exclude list for a client, only the most specific exclusion is used.

Manual:
VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 6.0 System
Administrator's Guide for Windows
VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 6.0 System
Administrator's Guide for UNIX
Page: N/A
Modification Type: Supplement
Modification:
Although an exclude list can be created
for a client which applies to all backups of that client, NetBackup also allows
creation of an exclude list for a specific policy, or a policy and schedule
combination of a client.
If there is more than one exclude list for
a client, NetBackup uses only the most specific one. For example, assume a
client has three exclude lists:
* An exclude list for a policy and
schedule.
* An exclude list for a policy.
* An exclude list for the entire
client. This list does not specify a policy or schedule.
If all 3 of these exclude lists were
implemented, NetBackup would only use the first exclude list (for policy and
schedule) because it is the most specific.
UNIX Example
In UNIX, an exclude list is implemented by
creating an exclude_list file with the suffix:
.<policyname>
or
.<policyname>.<schedulename>
The following are two examples for a
policy named wkstations that contains a schedule named fulls:
/usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list.wkstations
/usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list.wkstations.fulls
The first file affects all scheduled
backups in the policy named wkstations.
The second file affects all scheduled
backups in the policy named wkstations whose schedule is named fulls.
For a given backup, NetBackup uses only
one exclude list with the most specific name. For the above examples, if the
two files exist, NetBackup will override the former with the latter and use
only:
/usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list.wkstations.fulls
Windows
For specific instructions on configuring
exclusions in Windows, please see the appropriate System Administrator's Guide
for the NetBackup version in your environment, referenced below in the Related
Documents section. Just as in UNIX, Windows only uses the most specific
exclude list defined for a client.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] How do i use
Exclude_list and Include_list in solaris 9 with NBU6 for filesystem backups
hi,
Can anybody suggest me about how to use Exclude & include list? what I've
tried so far is ,
i created a App_FS policy for application filesystem backup for multiple
clients. For each client i created combination of exclude & include list
with different tries (naming convention is : exclude_list.App_FS or
include_list.App_FS etc)
1 Try: In exclude list i wrote *
to negate everything and then in include list i wrote all the filesystem of
which backup i want to take. but it didnt give me outcome rather it
started multiple backups of a last stream written in include_list for
those filesystem which donot present on that client.
2 Try: then i added all posible file system in the policy and made
an exclude list file in which i wrote all those file system which are not
present in the server. This technique worked for me but there is a problem
, Netbackup start all the streams for filesystem which donot belongs to
that client and ends with status 71 with comments " none of the files in the
file list exist" . infact i dont want that error message in my NBU Admin
console.
can any body guide me the right way to implement Exclude_include list?
Thanks,
Kashif Anwar.
