What SP are you running? Whats in the event logs?
Any updates applies? I know Microsoft released a new VSS update.

I get the same error on base version 6.0 client and 6.0 MP4 client.   

I tried to run a system state backup with ntbackup and the same thing
happens.  So it looks like it has something to do with the system state on
the system.
