Far as I know, yes there are only 2 methods. Rather than relying on a
script, why dont you simply configure the catalog to write to 1 tape, and
then write to disk.
 
then, depending on where you save the catalog too (ie: Disk on the NBU
Server, or another Server), just backup that data to tape.
 
so in essense, you have:
 
1 x Catalog Backup to Tape (by default configured in the catalog backup)
1 x Catalog Backup to Disk (by default configured in the catalog backup)
1 x Catalog Backup to Tape using a policy.

I have my catalog backup configured to go to 2 online disk areas instead of
tape.  It will alternate form one file system (directory) to another.  My
question is I also want to put a copy on tape as well. How can I do this?
The catalog config only allows 2 options. Can I run a manual DB backup to
tape using cron and a script?
