3,733 to be exact. Everyone thinks we are nuts when they first hear
this and then think it's pretty cool and creative what we are doing. To
put it in the simplest of terms, NBU does not allow you to pass
parameters, but it does pass the policy name. Therefore, we use unique
policy names to effectively pass parameters. This basically means that
for about 1,500 databases, we only have to maintain 2 scripts.

For example:

These are 3 policies for the same instance. I know it is a UDB backup
on physical server aldar, test database instance tdbin125, database
prodrepi ... and then I know whether or not this is an online or offline
database backup or if it is a log backup. We also use the name of the
schedules to indicate retention periods. Ergo, one script gets called,
it knows everything it needs to build the backup command, the script
determines the appropriate retention period for the day of the month,
adds the appropriate schedule, etc.

The only thing we insist on is that the DB teams maintain an asset list
of their active DB's. Then each morning, policies are automatically
generated for any new DB's.

It works great for us - haven't had to touch this process for over a
year. It is the same process for sybase and oracle and we are currently
adding SQL into this mix. The only companies I know of with more
policies have multiple NBU master servers.

I would be interested in your comments about this process. Maybe there
is a better way to do it, but we implemented this in the NBU 3.4/4.5
days and it has served us well.

We have around 3,000 policies and it takes about 40 minutes for
BPSCHED to get through them.

Agree with the last two entries.

In my opinion the wake up interval has nothing to do with it. It
sounds like the server is being hammered, new media server required.

I would split the backup load by adding another media
server.

        Hi,

Our netbackup master-media server a SF6900 with 4 dual core
CPU's and 16 Gb of memory is 100% utilized all the times. The only time
it gets some respite is during the afternoon, when users do not want to
load their system with backup processes.

Even with 20 Active backups our server indicates a minimum of 95
% util. I checked ps -ef and found numerous bptm and bpsched processes.

How can we reduce the bptm processes??? I spoke to an
ex-colleague and he opined that we change the scheduler invocation to 20
mins from the default 10 mins in the global attributes. Since we have
around 1000 policies and hence the scheduler might not able to complete
its first round and meantime nbu would invoke another one. This
overlapping he said shd be reduced.

Any suggestions to reduce CPU load on netbackup server,
especially as to what might be invoking these bptm processes??????
