Sounds like bpsched to me.

I ran into bpsched hangs, and this techinote fixed it, however the
technote references solaris, and I was runngin a singel master/media.

I don't know if it could be an issue for you since you have a solaris
master, even though things are working on some of the HP-UX media
servers.
