I had the same problem w/ the 156 errors. With VSP enabled  I would get the 156 
errors, but the
backup would complete and there was an image in the catalog.  I tried 
everything to fix this and
nothing worked.  I finally resorted to disabling VSS, which is pretty easy in 
windows once you know
where they buried this feature.    This is set on the Master server, not the 
clients.   From the
Master Server Host Properties (not any client properties) go to Client 
attributes.  Then manually
add the client that you want to disable VSS on to the list.  If you have never 
done this the list is
empty.   After adding the client to the list open the tab called "Windows open 
File backup an
de-select the checkbox called "enable windows open file backups for this 
client".
 After spending some time on the phone w/ Veritas it turns out that the 156 
error  was a code issue
(bug) that was fixed in MP4. After I upgraded the 156 errors went away, I 
enabled VSS on all the
clients and VSP has been working fine since.
