I've used a demo license in the past for PROOF-OF-CONEPT:

I've monitored a box using the highlest level of encryption at AES-256, it put 
25% load on the client backing up the data, (a mediocre 1.0GHZ sunfire 210) and 
had good performance otherwise, the standard 11-12MB/s on a 100mbps network.

I do not forsee any problems using this, perhaps if we were using 486s, I think 
we might have an issue then! ;)

        I have no idea of the cost to turn this option on, but I do know that 
it will require an enormous amount of processing power and that there is a good 
chance you will see a performance/throughput hit that will be totally 
unacceptable to your backup schedule. 
        I would suggest that you get a demo license to test with before 
spending ANY money on it. 
        There are HW encryption options available (we have one) that probably 
would be more cost effective if you include the added server load required to 
encrypt your data.
