One of the classic problems with DLT drives (not SDLT) is that most
contamination is environmental and is drawn into the drive by the forced
air cooling system in the case or library. The leader that pulls the
tape through the tape path to the take-up reel gets as dirty as the head
and tape path, but because there is no way for the cleaning tape to
clean the leader it just gets dirtier as time passes. This leader is
passing over the R/W head on every load and unload, depositng dirt back
onto the head. This is why you often see the cleaning light come back on
after one or two tape loads following a clean. The only solution is to
get your hardware engineer to clean the leader or replace it.

We have seen this when the tape drive and/or tape cart are failing. Do
you see the cleaning light on the tape drive. With the dlt7000 the
cleaning light came on when the drive had an ioerror. Cleaning may or
may not clear up the problem. I believe that most of the time cleaning
does not clear up the problem.=20
The ce can check the error logs in the drive and let you know if
multiple tapes are having the same problem.

We have an ATL P3000 library with 5 DLT drives. Just recently,
backups that happen to land on two particular drives among the five seem
to run much more slowly than expected. Anyone else seen anything like
this, please, and can suggest a remedy?

        Thanks!
