Hi,
A few weeks ago I pulled the last two DLT 7000 drives from a
couple of STK L700 libraries. I had not been recording data on these two
drives since mid-July, though I do have monthly fulls with 7 month
retention sitting on DLT IV media the DLT 7000 drives had been using. The
remaining SDLT 220 drives in the L700 libraries have a dedicated metal in
gap (MIG) read head specifically to read DLT IV media. I felt brave at
the time. I felt I could figure out how to read DLT IV media with the
SDLT 220s thru NetBackup if a restore request came in.
Guess what happened? :-)
OK, I can't find anything in the documentation on how to support
backward read capability of newer drive types which support older media
types. Remember, backward read-compatability also applies to LTO drives &
media, so this is a forward-going issue.
I contacted Symantec support. God bless Australia, but the
support tech suggested lying about the media type by using "vmchange
-new_mt dlt2 -m L30022". This experiment failed:
mounting L30022
error requesting media TpErrno = Requested number of
drives are not configured
following files not restored....
Does anyone know how NetBackup can support the native backward
read-compatability of SDLT drives with DLT IV media?
