I think it really depends on what version of Netbackup you use, and also
the version of OnTap that you have as well.

I haven't used a NetApp and Netbackup in the same environment for over
18 months, but when I was I had the filer taking regular snapshots
through out the day and had a script on a Solaris box to make one each
night at 11pm. The 11pm snapshot was then written to tape using NDMP and
Netbackup. I just pointed the Netbackup policy at the snapshot path and
name. If I remember correctly, The NDMP backup would not take a snapshot
first, that's why we had a UNIX box do it instead.

I might be wrong though, it's been a while!

Yes, it creates a snapshot named something like this
snapshot_for_backup.XXX -G
