Subject: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup 6.0 Symantec Conference in Reston, VA @
10/06/2005

Symantec Conference Highlights

1) NetBackup 6.0 is VERY nice.

2) It went GA on 10/03/2005.

3) The industry is moving towards disk to disk to tape backups and
some people are doing disk to disk only.

4) Symantec has married NetApp, 75% of the discussion was how
great NetApp was.

5) Enterprise Vault 6.0 was also covered as well as its
components.

6) There was a lot of discussion on the integration with Exchange
and Enterprise Vault, essentially there is full integration, once a
message in Exchange has been deemed old or flagged it is "sucked in" to
Enterprise Vault and all of the e-mails, instant messaging, etc, can be
fully monitored.

7) This was their 10th conference, located in Reston, VA. The
previous ones being held in NY, LA etc, they stated that this was the
largest turnout.

8) NetBackup reporter and GDM are incorporated into a "NetBackup
Operations Manager" which provides nice pie charts and bar graphs that
managers like to see.

9) NetBackup 6.0 will not only be able to send out e-mails, but it
will also have an SNMP option to integrate with HP Tivoli and CA's
UNICENTER product.

10) The authentication to login to the "NetBackup Operations Manager"
will utilize VxSS.

11) Bare Metal Restore is NOT_INCLUDED in NetBackup 6.0, BUT it is NOW
part of NetBackup GUI and infrastructure, it is no longer a stand alone
product.

12) The most exciting thing I found was they finally made the Catalog
Backups its OWN POLICY, so you can backup as frequently as you like and
do hot catalog backups AS WELL AS _INCREMENTAL BACKUPS_! VERY COOL
stuff.

=20

These were the highlights of the conference.

=20

They also gave out a 12MB CD (8mb compressed), which has a lot of PDF's
outlying the new features in XX-6.0, but I dare not post it here.

If someone wants to host the ISO, shoot me an e-mail asap and I will
send it to you.
