Folks,

Being a Unix admin in charge of the tape backup system here, I've got a
problem with a number of Windows servers that is driving me nuts. I'm hoping
someone out there with Windows experience can help or at least give me some
leads as to here to look.

PROBLEM:
========
Backups kick off, some some data to the media server, and then the backup
appears to hang; nothing more is sent but the jobs stays active. The NetBackup
Client services are still running. The 'bpbkar.exe' process is shown as
running
in the Windows Task Manager. When I terminate the job from the NetBackup side,
the jobs ends with a status 150 (as it should). However, on the client, the
'bpbkar.exe' process is still listed. When one of the Windows operators
attempt
to terminate it, they get the error message

"Unable to terminate process: the operation could not be completed.
    The binding handle is invalid."

Any future attempts to run a backup fail with other bpbkar.exe processes
starting but nothing every happens (no data is sent to the media server). A
reboot, and sometimes an actual power cycle, of the server is the only thing
that seems to clear things. It appears that this hung 'bpbkar.exe' process
will prevent Windows from shutting down and require an actual (yuck!) power
cycle of the box.

ENVIRONMENT: Master/Media server: Solaris 8, NetBackup 4.5 MP4
Clients: Windows 2000 and 2003 (patch levels vary)

I know the release of NetBackup is a bit old; I wish I could upgrade but I have
no test/dev environment and can't get approval for an untested upgrade. So I'm
stuck working with what I've got. Again, being a Unix admin with no real
Windows admin experience, I'd love to hear what may be going on here. I'd also
like to hear if anyone else has run across similar/identical problems. Thanks.
