Earlier this year, we restored data backed up on HPUX with NetBackup to 
an IBM RS6000 without NetBackup simply by reading the tar image.  As the 
previous poster mentioned, you do have to skip the volume header, and 
you might also have to skip over other backup images to get to the one 
you want (does BackupExec put multiple images on a tape?).  I also seem 
to remember reading that even at the beginning of the backup image there 
is a short image header that you might have to skip using FSR instead of 
FSF.
