They will install and run together on the same box. We did this for
awhile. One problem I found is if you use the archive bit on Windows
for determining what gets backed up on an incremental, the first one to
backup the data will change the archive bit so the next one that backs
up the data won't backup all the data you expect. Also if they happen
to run at the same time, one might time-out. I didn't have control over
the BackupExec implementation, only NetBackup, and didn't have access to
the systems, at the time we did this, so it made trouble-shooting
NetBackup difficult for me. If you're the one controlling everything
you should be able to set it up so both work. Of course there's always
the backup window to consider. Can you do both backups in your window?
Some of our full backups take over 24 hours to complete.=20

Our experience wasn't a pleasant one. The Backup Exec environment was
outdated and unreliable (wasn't being maintained properly, we found out
after the guy was let go) which is one of the reasons we consolidated
everything on NetBackup. I didn't have enough information about the
systems we cut over. Looking back now we should have done a more
gradual cutover, moving a few non-critical systems over at a time and
testing them to get the kinks worked out. At one point we just went for
it, as staying on Backup Exec was a greater risk than having some
NetBackup problems to troubleshoot.=20

Does anyone know the specific reason why (DLL conflict or something
else), as to why we can't have NetBackup and BackupExec client agents on
the same server. We have a specific server that we want to backup with
NetBackup. However, the special IT support team for the Execs may want
the ability to do their own backups as well to a local tape drive.

I am aware that Veritas states not to use both products to back up the
same box. The question is why? Since we may need to choose one or the
other backup software to use depending upon final implementation
testing, I would like to know what would be the preferred order of
installation and can we disable one backup system from running if there
are no DLL issues?

Thanks,
