Master and media servers can have differing patch levels, and even be at

different versions, so long as the master server is at the highest 
version and patch levels.  I think this applies so long as nothing is 
more than one major release back.  I have a 5.1MP3A master with some 
4.5FP5 media servers and clients.  I've heard that 3.4 clients work, but

is almost certainly not supported by Veritas.

Veritas did this for the very reason you cite:  So that you can do the 
upgrade without having to upgrade everything at once.  Just make sure 
your master server is at the highest release/patch level.
