The dedicated drive is needed at 5.1.

A future version of NetBackup is expected to remove this restriction, for 
remote NDMP only.  As far as I know there is no suggestion that NDMP 
drives attached to appliances will be shareable through NetBackup.

If you are having problems, make sure you have the security set up right.  
It is a bit confusing, as while you normally for backup to a drive 
attached to an appliance need to add in NetBackup the authentication 
details that log you into the appliance, for remote NDMP you need to add 
authentication information to log into the server itself.
