VSP does not require 30 percent of your volume size, that is just a
default setting. VSP uses a cache-on-write algorithm. If you start a
snapshot and then change nothing on your original volume, the cache will
remain very small, nearly empty. If you start a snapshot for a volume
that changes a lot, for instance by re-indexing the SQL server that is
installed on it, you will find your cache file too small unless it is
the same size as the volume that you want to snap. Solution: only use
snapshots on volumes that are relatively calm during the period that the
backup takes place. If you do that, it is a very good method to make
backups of volumes containing large amounts of small files, like user
profiles etcetera.
