Jennifer, I know certain management can always be thick headed. But
based on the responses to this list, you may seriously think about
printing off the responses (maybe do a little editing to remove some of
the thoughts on "management") and show them how many people are in
agreeance with you." It may not do much good, but you will CYA, and
show them that it just isn't you who thinks this way.

=20

Also, you may want to explain to them, as I have heard it phrased on
this forum before, that the company did not purchase a backup system,
you purchased a restore system. And as Ed explained, it is better to
back up an open file and get a status 1, then not backup one at all. =20

=20

If it is reporting and seeing yellow ones that drives them nuts, I wrote
a bunch of scripts to show errors as anything that is not status 0 or 1,
219 (because all the storage units are in use) If they gripe about that
one, then give them a PO to order more drives.

=20

Also, on exclude lists, a good practice is to only exclude things like
/cdrom and /u01/oradata if you are using BCVs or snapshots on another
host to perform the database backup. =20

=20

You don't want your nightlyfulls to grab the oradata directory. Backing
it up is both a waste of time and resources, as it won't be useful for a
restore unless the database is down cold, and often times the oradata
directory is the largest directory(ies) on the system.

=20

There are some other valid reasons, but using them to list all open
files isn't one of them, in my opinion.
