Subject: [Veritas-bu] Backup over WAN link & QoS

All,

Several of my customers are using WAN links in combination with Veritas
NetBackup 5.x, mainly Windows platforms. From time to time they have massive
problems, all errors seem to relate to dropped packages or other network
related stuff. Somebody at Veritas told me to configure QoS. I have heard it
mentioned before, but have no idea how to set up QoS. Anybody familiar with
it? Will it help?

Regards,

Marcel van Drunen

Marcel,

QoS is "Quality of Service" and is something you'd need to
configure on your "edge" routers (i.e. the ones that connect your sites to
their WAN links). Availability of QoS depends

On the type of link you have (e.g. ATM allows it but Frame Relay doesn't
AFAIK) and also on the routers you have.

The idea behind QoS is to create a "pipe within a pipe" so that
you can reserve a certain fraction of your WAN bandwidth to be used for
specified purposes. The inner pipe will have guaranteed bandwidth but
packets in the "outer pipe" will be subject to dropping as you are seeing
now. Voice over IP often needs QoS to work well, for example. The only
downside is that when the "inner pipe" (the NetBackup one in your case) is
not in use, its bandwidth cannot be "grabbed" for other purposes.

Good Luck!

Richard.
