James,
    I posted a msg about this some months back -- what you'll have to do is
to manually
expire the "partial" media or more and more will be gobbled up (whether they
are eventually
recycled is not clear).

    What I think you are seeing is the lack of an "outer loop" in the N/B
code that, having
detected a media error, should rewind not just to the beginning of the tape
(which is
indeed re-tried as you see) but also to the entire "tape set" used so far.
I see this behaviour
on version 3.4 and I'm hoping it will be gone when I upgrade.
