Would I be correct to create a zone on the DNS server, one which holds
information containing the backup LAN host names (server_nameb). So when the
client with b suffix in the policy is called for a backup the master\media
server uses REQUIRED_NETWORK_INTEFACE to talk down the backup NIC which will
have DNS settings pointing to the one holding backup DNS zone information.

When the client talks back down the LAN it does the same or would already
know about the packet sender through the handshake rule

Regards,

Imran

I think you are on the right track. What they are saying is you need to use
the hostname associated with the backup NIC in the required_interface entry.
Then in your policies you need to refer to the client by that name.
Otherwise you could have problems with your restores.

Keep in mind that the required_interface entry only tells NBU how to send
outbound traffic. You could still get requests on the primary side depending
on how your routing is set up but the main thing is to make sure the data
from the client going to the media server uses the right NIC thus path.

Hope this helps,

Dan O

Hi

Has anyone had much experience of using REQUIRED_NETWORK_INTEFACE on Windows
environment?

We have backup server with two NICs (Backup and Public LAN), backing up a
number of servers all with two NIC cards

In order to get the backup data to go down the backup LAN when using DNS not
host files the admin guide says put the backup NIC name
REQUIRED_NETWORK_INTEFACE for that client. What is the backup NIC name? is
it the name given to the connection in control pane\network connections or
is it the host name placed in a backup zone on the DNS

Our Example,

Server host name = tom with ip 10.0.0.1 (public)

Backup host name = tomb with ip 10.128.5.1(backup)

On the DNS if we have a zone called backup and add all servers with
servernameb and then put servernameb into REQUIRED_NETWORK_INTEFACE will it
work or have I understood it incorrectly????

Kind Regards,

Imran Khan
