As mentioned in other replies it depends on expectations/service level
agreements. I have used Netbackup to backup an AD domain controller across
the WAN (DS3) and at best get 1 meg a second. I would never desire to try a
restore at that level.

Have you considered replication technology? It will require a large disk
pool at the main site but if you have data replicated from the branches to
the main site and then back it up there. Again service levels come into
play if you use them. The amount of replication traffic will depend on how
close to real time you need to have the central site. Restore is still an
issue due to band width.

Ken,

Netbackup can handle it. The only problem is that due to speed
restrictions - you will probably only be able to get one full backup per
server per month. Restores would be even more traumatized. Especially
with the 'timeouts' you'd get. You best performance would be to have
sized media servers at the remote sites and controlled from HQ. Tape
duplication during off peak times to HQ would also be a possibility.

Thank you,

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Long Distance Backup

I am located at company headquarters where my main NetBackup server is
located. Now, they want me to start backing up branch servers out in
the field. Some locations have T1 and some have fractional T1. Servers
range from 10 GB up to 140GB of data. What methods are best for long
distance backups? Should I install media servers at some branch
locations? How reliable is restoring at long distances? Can NetBackup,
or for that matter, any backup software, be able to handle long distance
backup with a T1 link? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Ken
