BMR can use local hosts instead of DNS. You can change the mac address by
editing the configuration. Copy the current configuration and then go into
the new configuration and go to the "edit Network" tab. Here you can change
the MAC address. Use that config when you do prepare to restore. You will
have to manually remove the original entry from /etc/ethers if it exists or
the prepare to restore will fail and tell you to do that.
The easiest way to test it would be to unplug the dev machine from the
network during the restore. But if you had to, you could also change the IP
address in the config but you need to be careful to set up NetBackup so that
it can resolve the name properly and you have to allow the new client to
restore the other's files, and keep in mind that after the machine is
restored, the original IP address is back - so you would need to unplug it
from the network right after the restore and right before the final reboot.
(Hint: If you set autoboot to false in the eprom, BMR will pause and wait
for a manual reboot.)
With BMR 4.7 there is a way to change the IP and hostname of the machine
before it reboots using the External Procedures feature. There is a sample
shipped that allows you to do that (it's in /opt/BareMetal/samples/EP). The
documentation for 4.7 goes into detail on how to use these External
Procedures.

I have been backing up and restoring TEST systems. Things have been working
ok.
Now i'd like to try my DV systems. Which is a production system to our
developers and can't be down.
BMR requires DNS to do it's restores. On Solaris servers it also needs the
same mac address.
So my question is how do you test a production bmr client? Do you need to
shutoff your clients?
