Hi Mr Bair,

I have seen this happening before. The cause of this is probably during
servicing of one of the drives in your library. So when the drive is
replaced, it is taken offline, then if so happens that the Win2k was doing
some Device Scanning at the time, then the Device Files would be out of
order when the drives do come back online.

Remedies:-
1. Check your Router configurations to see if there are any additional
settings that needed to be set to address this problem
2. Check your SDLT320 driver versions. I strongly recommend that you use
Quantum drivers.
3. Run tpautoconf -show to verify which one is being mixed up. For example,
if the first 4 are ok, only the last 4 are mixed up, then under Computer
Management->Device Manager->Tape Drives. You should see all your 8 SDLT
drives. In order to get the Device Files in correct order, you will need to
uninstall those drives. In this example, you will need to uninstall the last
4 drives. You can verify this by checking their LUNs. Right-click the
device->Uninstall. You must uninstall all the 4 drives. Then do a "scan for
hardware changes" and all should be aye-okay. Use tpautoconf -show to
verify.

Also, not too sure about NBU4.5, but in my experience, I usually disable
Removable Storage service. :)

Good luck,
David Chan

I have a Compaq ESL9000 which is connected through a Compaq Network storage
Router M2402 which houses 8 SDLT 160/320 drives. The problem I am seeing is
this. When the OS finds these drives (win2k sp4), it is finding them out of
order. That is, the LUN's are not ordered the same as they are in the
storage router or library. What this does is causes the software (netbackup
datacenter 4.5 MP3) to see the drives out of order. This in turn is causing
the drives to go down periodically with the following in the error logs:

Fatal open error on COMPAQSDLT3204 (device 4, \\.\Tape6): The system cannot
find the file specified. DOWN'ing it

As of last week, I had 6 drives in the library, and the system did not have
this problem. Adding the additional drives is causing this strange behavior,
and I was hoping that someone might be able to offer some help.
