I had one incident that the reason why the drives are being down was because
of a lot of bad tapes. Please verify that your tapes are genuine and not
refurbished.

I would have the hardware vendor come and take a look at the tape drive to
see that it is ok.
 
Also try doing a drive cleaining.

I am facing a problem with the daily backups. The 
Activity Monitor in Veritas Java Console shows the operation 
as "Mounting" for indefinitely. And my /var/adm/messages has this :
