We have two netapps, which are backed up as a mapped drive through a
relatively fast windows host (xeon) over gigabit.
I did a test restore of the whole thing, and discovered similar issues.
The restore took as long as the backup, and we got all the files back.
The error logs reported some very odd errors that I've never seen
before, but the file actually made it back to disk. We used an
alternate disk as a target, because the netapps were still in
production. We rely heavily on the netapp snapshots for quick recovery,
and use the tape backup as an archive method, and for users who realize
they need a file from a long time ago. I opened a support ticket with
Veritas regarding the error during restore, and they told me that
alternate path restores from a mapped drive backup of a netapp would
produce this error. Since all the data came back, I'm satisfied with
the results. We also manage user data recovery from these boxes by
setting expectations low. Then when we do find the file they need, we
look like super heroes. NDMP is not an option for us due to expense.
I use a bpstart.cmd script to ensure the drive is mapped for backups.
As for restores, we have a profile setup for the netbackup user which
maintains mapped drives. It's somewhat klunky, but that's all we have.
It works about 95% of the time. Typically, a restore is for one file,
or one directory, which we put on a locally attached disk, then an admin
copies it to the real destination and assigns permissions. Until NDMP
is free, or a better way is invented... that's how we do it.
