Timothy,
Can you describe your restore situation after you migrate the disk backups
to tape? I am under the impression that the migration to the tape will
require a separate policy and be treated as an entirely new backup, which in
turn will require a double restore process.

| We currently run Netbackup 3.4 and it appears you cannot
| write to disk - does this mean I will have to upgrade to 4.5?
|

Well actually you can (at least in 3.4.1 I've seen around, but I think it
should be there in 3.4 also).
You can create a Storage Unit of type "Disk" and subsequently specify the
Media Server and the absolute path to a directory (of the Media server).
Then in the class definition you select as "Class storage unit" the name of
the newly created storage unit.
If you would like to have your disk backups to the other building you'll
need to set up a media server there.

Thanks everyone for all the useful information. I think my proposal will be:

Install master (or media server) offsite in secondary building. This server
will be connected to a disk array filled with cheap disks in RAID 5.

I will perform incremental backups to disk Mon - Thurs and a Full backup on
Friday (still to disk). During Saturday day, I will write the disks to tape
and send to DR unit on Monday morning. The worst case scenario is that I
loose the data onsite, the filer and will have to restore from tape that
could be one week out of date - Management agree this is an acceptable loss.
Does this sound sensible to everyone?

Thanks,
Timothy.

That's what I plan to do. In addition, I have another Filer in our remote
office and I replicate mission critical data to that filer for a fast
recovery. Management insist on doing this. I have some docs for viewing if
you are interested.

We are planning to buy STK L700 with IBM Fiber Channel LTO generation 2
tape drive, I would like to hear your opinion about the LTO 2 tape
drive.

Thanks
Jackie
