I have been backing up my Netapp for sometime now before I upgraded to 4.5.
I am pretty sure you have to dedicate that drive to NDMP and you cannot
backup any other clients. Before I started using NDMP to backup the filer, I
simply added the cifs shares to my servers (H drive, G drive) and backed
them up that way. The problem I had was the performance. For some reason it
took hours to backup and restore a share with alot of small files in it. For
example 8hours for a 7GB share with 15,0000 files. We worked with Netapp
Veritas and 3com but could never resolve this issue which is why I am now
using NDMP.

   I'm in the process of configuring an NBU installation. I have NBU
Business Server 4.5, one NetApp filer, one library with a single tape
drive, a win2k server acting as the media/master server and a couple of
win2k, linux and solaris clients to backup. From the documentation it
seems that I need to dedicate a tape drive to an NDMP storage unit if I
want to backup the NetApp via NDMP. If I do this, is there any way to
backup the other clients to that tape drive? There seemed to be a hint
in the docs that I can make the master server an NDMP/proxy server.
Does anyone have any pointers?

Thanks,

Barry Lustig
