[Veritas-bu] Three minutes, then the restore dies (positionin g timeout??)
2003-08-13 17:04:45
bpverify can verify the image to either side of the desired image but not
the image I want to restore. bpduplicate cannot duplicate to a new tape
either. This image is, unfortunately, toasted. The 3-minutes-to-failure
consistency must just be amazing coincidence.
I froze the tape, wiped a tear away, and am moving on with my life.

I didn't think the two were related - especially in this case since data has
yet to flow but I set them the same anyway (hard-linked, actually).
The image I need restored failed to duplicated. I'm trying a bpverify on it
right now instead. I may just have a bad spot of tape. It's not looking
good for the requestor...

Hi
Do you use SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS & NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS? If you do, make sure
that you add (if it is not there), NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS_RESTORE. This file's
value (eg 32 or 64) must be the same value as NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS. Try this
and let us know if this helped.

These are LTO Ultrium drives. It's the same tape drive each time but a
different drive with each attempt I'm making now.
My next idea is to try to duplicate the tape, using a different media
server, & then try to restore from the duplicate.
The precise three minute apparent (?) timeout on positioning is what makes
this suspicious. If it were 3:39, then I'd suspect the tape itself more.

Is it on the same tape each time?
Is it on the same tapedrive each time?
The only time I have seen media positioning errors in our installations is
has been due to tape errors.
But sometimes it helped just to load the tape on a different drive.
I have only had the problem on backups (thank God never on restores)
What tapedrives do you use?
