I don't know how many mounts are recommended.  Probably a whole lot
more than you're ever going to encounter before changing tape
technology.  

It might not be a bad idea to use a catalog tape for "awhile", then
replace it with a different one and put the original into regular
rotation (where it will be used much less often).  If you do, you'll
need to use vmquery -deassignbyid (be extremely careful with this
command) and bplabel so that the tape can be used for regular
backups.  

To see the number of mounts, use vmquery -m $MEDIAID

buckeye% vmquery -m d00001 | grep mounts
number of mounts:      25
max mounts allowed:    ---
