Thanks all, the overwhelming reply appears to be 2 things:
1) (I would have eventually found this one) I have my parameter order out of
whack.
2) (I'd have never noticed this) I used the semi-quote instead of a backtick
for my grep statement. D'OH!
I am slowly getting better at this thanks to all you folks.
