Junction does not create a volume mount point, it creates a junction point.
The difference is pretty subtle - a volume mount point will link a folder to
a volume, a junction point will link a folder to a folder. Junction points
and volume mount points are specific cases of a reparse point.
The new db is on my D drive, so Diskeeper should still defrag during the
regular defag for this volume (it is not on an un lettered volume)

If so, what is the difference between what junction.exe does and using a
volume mount point?
If this is just creating a volume mount point, beware that Diskeeper doesn't
defrag the data on the mount point. If you want to defrag your catalog,
mount the disk on the mount point and give it a drive letter (not sure about
junction.exe, but you can do this with the Logical Disk Manager that comes
with Windows 2000). Then tell Diskeeper about the new drive letter and it
will work fine (but make sure you don't put the server in a policy with
ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES **AND** cross mount points or I think you'll back the data
up twice).

Thanks to everyone who answered my question. I did not want to use the
ALTPATH method, as this could be a management nightmare, long term.
I used a solution no one mentioned, so I will post it here:
1) Backup Cataog
2) Shut down services.
3) Copied \db directory to new volume.
4) Renamed the old one (a bit paranoid - but this i s a good
thing!)
5) Created a new, empty \db directory.
6) Used the www.sysinternals.com "junction.exe" utility to
create to
create a link to the other volume's \db directory.
7) Restart the services, and change the catalog backup
locations.
8) Test, Test, Test.
