You might be able to try this. It might work,
if the NDMP backup was made by a NetApp.

Mount your tape in a compatible drive, standalone
preferred so you can hear and watch the drive.
# mt -t /dev/rmt/0n fsf 1
which will forward the pointer over the
NBU header. Make sure you use the No-Rewind
device. You might have to fast forward 1 more
header, which would be the NDMP header,
I'm not sure. Just don't give up on that important
data. Then, use the Unix restore command
# ufsrestore rf /dev/rmt/0n
You could try the "t" option first to see if you
get a listing. However, if the NDMP dump was
made by another vender, you are at their disposal
as to be compliant with Unix UFSDUMP and
UFSRESTORE. NetApp is compliant.

Good Luck.

If this works, please post your results.

I've
researched it both through Veritas and through our Network Appliance

It might be possible to use tar from a unix machine to read the tape,
but I haven't tried this. I don't suspect it would be easy, though.
Good Luck
