just to clarify, "My 2=A2,... with L700, library cleaning (hardware-based) =
seems to work=20
best..."

This is with the L700 (and L180 and OEMs from SUN, HP, etc.). That's=20
because with 3.4=5F1 (info from patch pasted below) and proper firmware, yo=
u=20
didn't have the issue with netbackup trying to mount a tape in a drive=20
when the library already had a cleaning tape in the drive. This is why=20
you can use hardware based cleaning on these without problems. You still=20
may have this issue with other libraries. When this happened before 3.4=5F=
1=20
and proper firmware, the drive would be downed.

The Patch README for NB=5F34=5F1 has this entry in it:

Description: Add robotic auto cleaning support for <STK> L series robots=20
(All NetBackup servers)=20

to clarify firmware requirements, the firmware level for the "L" series=20
robot needs to be at least version 0230.=20

If using DLT7000 drives, the drive firmware needs to be at minimum 106 /=20
6A hex.

20 Tape Drives

there are a lot of posts on this.=20

in a nutshell...=20

- until recently, tape alert was always on and couldn't be turned off.=20

- 3.4.1=5F4a and 4.5=5F1 added the ability to add a touch file to turn off =

tape alert. it is still on by default.=20
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/NO=5FTAPEALERT or C:\program=20
files\volmgr\database\NO=5FTAPEALERT=20

- if you decide to use the autoclean feature of the library, the tapes=20
need to be in the reserved area. netbackup will NOT know about them.=20

- if you decide to use netbackup, frequency based or tape alert, the tapes =

need to be in a regular slot and configured as the appropriate type of=20
cleaning tape within netbackup. the library will NOT use these tapes for=20
the autoclean feature of the library.=20

- you can have problems with SSO not releasing drives, which is related to =

tape cleaning. from release notes when NO=5FTAPEALERT was added... If a=20
TapeAlert-based cleaning was initiated by ltid or avrd for an ACS, TLH, or =

an LMF drive, the drives would never get released by the vmd/DA. Since=20
these robot types clean themselves, we do not need to initiate cleaning.=20
If TapeAlert-based cleaning was initiated by ltid or avrd for non-API SSO=20
robots and no cleaning media was available, or the number of cleanings was =

0, the drives would never get released by the vmd/DA.=20

My 2=A2, pick one or the other but don't do both. with L700, library=20
cleaning (hardware-based) seems to work best. remove all cleaning tapes=20
from netbackup AND disable tape alert to avoid SSO problems.=20

Tape Drives

Hi!

I have an L700e Tape Library with DLT7000 and SDLT320 Tape drives.
Up to now I use frequency based cleaning for the DLT7000 Tape Drives
(cleaning frequency 250 hours)with a labeled cleaning tape in the=20
unreserved
library cells.

But for Super DLT Drives its not recommended to use frequency based
cleaning.
How can I enable TapeAlert for automatically cleaning through netbackup?

The autoclean option in the L700e library will only be turned on, if I
insert cleaning tapes in the reserved cells. But if this is done, I use=20
the
robotic based TapeAlert Cleaning and not the TapeAlert Cleaning through
Netbackup.

Any ideas how to enable TapeAlert with Netbackup 4.5 (Patch 2)??

Regards and thanks in advance,
Klaus Micheler

Hi

In order to get NBU up and running have been trying to get AIX 5.1=20
drivers
for STK 9940B tap drives - but according to the STK website only AIX 4.x=20
is
supported. Anybody resolved this issue? So for have not managed to get
anything meaningful from the local STK reps.
